Tesla in fatal 2018 crash didn’t even brake, finds official report

The report into the March 2018 crash that killed Walter Huang has blamed a litany of failures in Tesla’s Autopilot process for the lethal accident.

Huang was killed when his Model X veered into a concrete barrier on the central reservation of a Mountain Perspective street. Huang had previously complained to his spouse that the Tesla had a tendency to veer towards the crash barrier at that location.

“System efficiency info downloaded from the Tesla indicated that the driver was running the SUV working with the Website traffic-Mindful Cruise Manage (an adaptive cruise management process) and Autosteer process (a lane-holding guide process), which are state-of-the-art driver support units in Tesla’s Autopilot suite,” the report states.

The investigation also reviewed preceding crash investigations involving Tesla’s Autopilot to see whether or not there have been widespread challenges with the process.

In its conclusion, it identified a collection of safety challenges, which includes US highway infrastructure shortcomings. It also determined a bigger range of challenges with Tesla’s Autopilot process and the regulation of what it named “partial driving automation units”.

One particular of the biggest contributors to the crash was driver distraction, the report concludes, with the driver apparently managing a gaming software on his smartphone at the time of the crash. But at the exact same time, it adds, “the Tesla Autopilot process did not deliver an powerful means of monitoring the driver’s level of engagement with the driving endeavor, and the timing of alerts and warnings was inadequate to elicit the driver’s reaction to stop the crash or mitigate its severity”.
