The Govt claims to have “comprehensively disrupted” scammers pretending to be from the Australian Taxation Business by way of a know-how trial operate in collaboration with telcos.
Communications Minister Paul Fletcher explained the ATO gained around 107,000 studies from the neighborhood of impersonation cons in 2019 by itself.
The rip-off phone calls appeared to appear from genuine – and broadly publicised – telephone numbers typically employed by Australians seeking to contact the tax office.
The scammers employed program “to mislead the caller line identification CLI know-how … of most mobile phones and fashionable mounted line phones,” the Govt explained.

At the Government’s ask for, Australia’s telcos joined alongside one another with the ATO and Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) on a 3-month trial of know-how to block these rip-off phone calls appearing to originate from genuine ATO telephone numbers,” Fletcher explained.
